Hairline

With probably the best title at the Fringe this year, it’s no surprise that this is a sold out performance. Deborah Frances-White is a woman that, as soon as she walks into the stage, manages to exude a certain sex appeal. Dressed in a black tight dress and top hat she breaks down the way men and women think, and how she explains how to turn this to your advantage by using a combination of body language and psychology.

Picking single members from the audience she invites them onto stage and watches how they react in a staged scenario. It’s a simple but effective idea, and Frances-White delivers her routine with great humour and fun. The transformation of some of the audience members from geeks to James Bond’s look-a-like is surprisingly effective!

This is a funny, informative show that will have you falling out of you seat in laughter at the way men and women’s minds think over the same subject (pearl of her wisdom has to be: men want to sleep with anything, were women want to go into a room, be desired by everyone, and then are more than happy to go home alone and eat ice cream safe in the knowledge that they did a good job). Insightful and enjoyable this is a fun hour that could benefit you more than you might realise!

Three Weeks

It was surprisingly difficult to convince the missus I was seeing a show with this title 'because my Editor forced me to'. Fortunately for my personal welfare, this hilarious show was not actually about promiscuity. Rather, Deborah takes a look at that endlessly debated subject, how to be sexy. If audience participation makes you squirm with shyness, beware! Or perhaps this could be just what you need. Along with the laughs, there was an endearing quality to this show. It was lovely to see one audience member gain confidence and coolness in just three minutes. Deborah's own story, whilst unexpected, was not unwelcome. I left wiser and charmed - but luckily for my concerned other half, not seduced!

The Stage

Review by Duska Radsavljevic. Published Monday 6 August 2007

Must See

Deborah Frances-White is an extraordinarily talented woman. Not only is her show guaranteed to make you laugh and get your juices flowing, but she will actually send you away believing you are James Bond if you are a man, and feeling good about believing you are a “Scorsese movie in a hat” if you are a woman.

I don’t want to give away all her jokes - and in fact that would be impossible as her best bits are actually made up on the spot - but suffice it to say that her proposed theories of what makes the other sex tick, however absurd, are most irresistibly compelling. Coming across as a combination of a sexy drama teacher and your favourite aunt in a ridiculous hat, Frances-White is endlessly quick-witted and entirely non-threatening. As a result, not only does she have no problems getting volunteers out on to the stage, but it’s almost a drag getting the crowd out of the auditorium. In any case, one thing is certain - in this show you’ll have a lot of fun - and who knows - you might even pull.

I first became aware of Deborah Frances White towards the end of Fringe 2006 with her excellent offering entitled Phoning It In, so was very pleased to see she was back for 2007 and made sure she was early on my list this time.

In essence the show has the feel of a seminar or self help group, but minus a pretentious presenter, as that is the last description that could be attributed to Ms Frances White.

Deborah is a very funny lady, she doesn't crack gags but interacts exceptionally well with her audience and her engaging personality keeps them with her all the way, as she leads and educates in the art of how to get everyone to want to sleep with you.

Ably assisted by her PA and several audience members the whole hour goes far too soon. Deborah the show is definitely a Scorsese film with a hat, and to find out what that means, go see the show for yourselves and I'm sure you'll agree.

***** Really good show, a guaranteed laugh 22 Aug 2007

Really liked this show. Went to see it after seeing a cameo appearance at another show and wasn't disappointed. Maybe Deborah should make all the gays (me included) put their hands up at the beginning - would make her job easier!

Wonderfull and funny show from a classy ad-libber. What's more she's very sure-footed; I felt completely at ease throughout this damn subject, and so did the rest of the audience, even while demonstrating - some of them - points and proofs for getting people to sleep with you.

the hour went far too fast. deborah was fantastic she played off the audience the whole way through and is quite clearly on the cusp of becomming huge! go see her for a decent price while you still can!

***** Ad-libbing, for real 17 Aug 2007

No doubt Deborah started out with a plan for the whole hour; but when a really charming, intelligent, perceptive lady (why, she must be, if she has a similar profesional background to the present writer...)with a genuine thirst for real engagement with her audience gets on stage, then nothing can really ever go precisely according to plan; nor did it. Her spirited, participating audience members soon took her into uncharted territory, which worried her not at all, and the whole, thoroughly entertaining hour whizzed by all too quickly.
